Winter in Mystic, Connecticut: Cozy Activities

The best part about Mystic, Connecticut that you can visit year-round. I’ve visited some towns across New England where many businesses shut down for the winter. There’s no shortage of things to do in Mystic during the winter. After the holidays, it is the quietest you will ever see Mystic.

Here are some things you can do in Mystic during the winter:

Go shopping — Olde Mistick Village is opened year round! There are plenty of shops and restaurants that you can enjoy. I’ve dedicated a blog about this fun Mystic destination here. In February, they host annual clam chowder festival and Ice in the Village event. Downtown Mystic has plenty of shops that you can visit. You can find warm sweaters at Tidal River Clothing, fun socks at Hang the Moon, mugs for those hot drinks during winters at Manufaktura and pick up lotion from Main Street Soap Emporium.

Visit the museums. — Mystic Aquarium located next door to Olde Mistick Village (you can make a day out of it at both locations!), the aquarium has indoor exhibits that you can enjoy. The outdoor exhibits where you can see the sea lions, beluga whales and penguins will be opened if you dare to brave the cold! Mystic Seaport Museum is opened during the winters but only half of the grounds. I would suggest waiting to visit to see all it has to offer. However, if you only can visit during the winter, don’t let that stop you from visiting the Seaport. You can see Charles W. Morgan whaling ship, which is one of the best exhibit at the museum. They also host Wintertide every Presidents’ Day weekend in February. Mystic Museum of Art is a small museum with beautiful curated art works. Opened year around with free admission (unless there is a special exhibition) but donations are appreciated.

Watch movies or get books — Watch a movie at the Mystic Luxury Cinemas (located at Olde Mistick Village) in the comfy plush chairs with some movie snacks. It is a nice theater. If you’re not a movie-goer, maybe you’re into books? There’s two bookstores in Mystic that you can visit! Bank Square Books has an impressive collection of the latest released books. No Other Books Like This, a used books bookstore located across the street from the train station. Worth a visit to check out the impressive collection of rare/antique books!

Eat your way through Mystic — we tend to load up on the carbs during winters, right? There’s plenty of recommendations in Mystic! Get the most delicious pastries at Sift Bake Shop, eat pizza like Julia Roberts at Mystic Pizza, missing the lobster roll? Off the Hook has a delicious lobster roll flight. The best waffles you can find at Popover Eatery. Get your seafood fix at S&P Oyster and enjoy the best waterfront views. In the mood for cozy tavern atmposhere? Look no further than Daniel Packer Inne. You can’t go wrong with any restaurants in Mystic!

I love Mystic during the winter, it’s so calm and peaceful. The quietness is perfect for that coziness vibes when I dine or visit a small business. It’s also fun not having to worry about parking so much! Enjoy your winter getaway to Mystic. If it inspires you to return for a spring visit, make your plans with my spring recommendations here!

How to have a Hallmark Christmas in Mystic, Connecticut

Before the 2023 holidays season began, Hallmark graced us with a movie based in Mystic, Connecticut. The movie, Mystic Christmas starred Jessy Schram, Chandler Massey and Patti Murin. We follow Juniper (Jessy Schram) who comes to Mystic to work at the rehabilitation center at Mystic Aquarium. She previously had a fling with Sawyer (Chandler Massey) who owns a pizza shop. They reconnected again and Juniper has to decide if she wants to stay in Mystic permanently. Fun fact: Tim from Mystic Pizza movie made an appearance in this movie too!

This movie is a love letter to Mystic! It was so fun to recognize all the familiar places in the movie. I thought I’d share here how you can re-create your own version of Mystic Christmas by visiting the filming locations:

MYSTIC AQUARIUM

It’s a real life aquarium with a rehabilitation center! Mystic Aquarium has a rehabilitation center helping rescued seals from beaches across CT and beyond. During the day hours, you can attend a seal show. That’s always my favorite part! To add a Christmas touch to your visit at the aquarium, I’d recommend you to check out the Home for Holidays — Lights Extravaganza event. It happens on selected nights where you can have a holiday stroll through the aquarium at night, enjoy the aquarium decorated in holiday lights.

MANGO’S PIZZA

The pizza shop is based at Mango’s Pizza in Olde Mistick Village. The pizza are really good, even earned a visit from Barstool Pizza Review with Dave Portnoy. The environment is very cozy and perfect for a lunch during your Christmas visit to Mystic.

SIFT BAKE SHOP

There is a lot of love for Sift in Mystic! It made quite a few appearances in the movie. I highly recommend you to go visit early in the morning before the lines gets long (trust me, they do!). You can’t go wrong with any pastries they offer from croissants, macarons, cookies and more. During the month of December, they have specials such as peppermint croissant and peppermint macarons.

FRIAR TUCK’S TAVERN

One scene in the movie showed the crew going to Friar Tuck’s Tavern for trivia night. I love eating at Friar Tuck’s and have been since they opened in their old location! They do host trivia nights so be sure to check their social media for specific nights. The bar is also decorated with the cutest Santa sleeves on the chairs.

HARBOR VIEW LANDING

The two homes (Candice’s house and the one Junpier stayed in) are located at Harbor View Landing. It is a luxury waterfront stay that you can rent. Make a weekend out of it and stay in the very house where they filmed (either Bluff House Floor 1 or Nantucket Cottage)!

DOWNTOWN MYSTIC & RIVER PARK

Several scenes shows Junpier and Sawyer walking across the drawbridge and the festival in Mystic River Park. While there won’t be a festival, you can enjoy the Christmas tree in the park! The downtown area is also decorated for the holidays where you can support the small businesses!

BANK SQUARE BOOKS

In one of the scenes, they went to Bank Square Books to pick out books for each other. While the filming location was at the former location in Downtown, they have since then moved to Stonington town line (80 Stonington Rd). The charm and books selection are the same at the new location. Worth a stop to pick up your holiday reads!

MYSTIC SEAPORT MUSEUM

There were many scenes filmed at Mystic Seaport Museum. South Entrance building was featured as the train station and where they had the town meetings in the movie.

Anchor Cafe and Sweets was where Junpier meets Sawyer again. It is a cafe located in the Mystic Seaport Museum gift shop offering food and drinks.

In the opening scene when Juniper was at a holiday party for work, it was inside the North Entrance building.

Lantern Lights Village was featured in the movie too. It is an annual event happening at Mystic Seaport Museum during December on selected nights. Be sure to check their website for more details and information.

Several more scenes were filmed at the Seaport. It is a beautiful grounds with seafaring history. December is one of my favorite months to visit because the grounds is decorated with beautiful seasonal garlands and wreaths.

HOLIDAY LIGHTED BOAT PARADE

The annual lighted boat parade was featured in the movie. The event has passed for 2024, but if you’re considering to come to Mystic for a future Christmas themed trip — definitely look into coming for the parade! It’s unique and always fun.

ABBOTT’S LOBSTER

The filming location took place at Abbott’s Outpost in Downtown Mystic which is no longer opened anymore. I do suggest a visit to Abbott’s in Noank during spring/summer!

ESKER POINT BEACH

The seal release in the movie happened at Esker Point Beach in Groton, Connecticut. While you won’t see an actual seal release (unfortunately!), the scenery at Esker is beautiful. From the shore, you can see Morgan Point Lighthouse and Mouse Island (an island with three homes). It is a small beach so it would be a quick stop to appreciate the beautiful shoreline.

Mystic is a beautiful coastal town with charm! Especially during the holidays. I’m so glad that Hallmark could see that and decided to capture it in the movie. I’m not the biggest fan of cheesy movies but this was a very well done movie portraying Mystic at Christmas time. There is plenty more to do in Mystic during Christmas which you can read more here: Celebrate Christmas in Mystic, Connecticut.

Happy Holidays!

Small Business Saturday in Mystic, Connecticut

The anticipation of Thanksgiving this week is making me excited to celebrate my traditions. Small Business Saturday always kicks off the holiday season! It starts with Santa coming to town on the tugboat, bustling shops and the annual holiday lighted boat parade. The community in Mystic puts on a good display of holiday decorations throughout the town too!

It’s not difficult to celebrate Small Business Saturday in Mystic with all of independently owned shops. I love supporting the mom and pop shops. Can’t get any more friendlier customer service from these shops! I’m going to name off a few of my favorites that you must visit:

Downtown Mystic

Mystic Knotwork is my favorite shop creating nautical knot souvenirs. I’ve already dedicated a blog about them, so read all about it here.

Tidal River Clothing Co. is a long fixture in downtown Mystic since 2004. There you will find the best selection of Patagonia clothing as well as other brands such as Helly Hansen and Prana. This is also the best shop to get your Mystic tees if you’re looking for one!

Hang The Moon, a shop for the women in your lives! Find women’s gifts made by women such as candles, jewelry, socks, ornaments, planters, mugs, etc. There’s so much options and the best part? Most of the shop is organized by theme. There’s the plants/garden section, mystical section, dog/cat mom section, you get the gist! They also have local artisans goods.

The Black Dog General Store and Sea Bags might be considered “chain stores” with few shops across New England. They are a New England operated businesses through! The Black Dog in Mystic is the only Connecticut shop. There’s clothing for the entire family and even your dogs! The staff in there is super friendly, always welcoming everyone. It’s not a surprise that I often find myself in there! Sea Bags is the same with friendly staff always ready to help you locate an item. Pick up a bag or tote made from recycled sails.

Main Street Soap Emporium definitely is the best bath and body shop! Here you can find a variety of soaps, hair products, lotions, bath bombs, oils, body washes and many more! The prices are amazing too - affordable everything is under $40. This is a perfect shop for stocking stuffers!

Mystic Army Navy Store is a military surplus store with apparel and accessories. They do have an impressive selection, so if you have a military enthusiast in your family, be sure to grab them a gift from here! They also have patches.

Bank Square Books is the community bookstore with a huge selection of books! I love popping in there to check out the locals section - books about the area or local authors. It’s neatly organized so it’s not challenging to find a book. If you do need help, the staff is friendly! The bookstore has a cozy environment, there is seating to read a chapter or relax.

Mystic Pet Shop I have been a loyal supporter of this store ever since I got my pup. You can’t beat how amazing the owners are. They remember me when I come in monthly to pick up the dog food (even know the exact brand!). In the past, I’ve messaged them on social media to inquiry if they carried a specific item - they were quick to respond. Don’t cross this off your list if you’re not a local - there are other items for you to buy. There’s souvenirs for your pooches! My favorite are the Mystic collars and leashes (of course I got one for mine!). There’s also a selection of toys and treats too.

Finer Line Gallery is a fine art gallery and custom framing shop. They also carry local artists’ artworks. I have purchased several Mystic scenery prints from this shop that hangs proudly around my home. There’s a great selection of nautical artwork if you’re looking to add lobsters, ships or lighthouses to your home (or for someone else!).

Marine Consignment of Mystic is the shop for the DIY lovers. When I have a nautical project for the home, I stop in here to find a nautical hardware (typically from boats) or look for nautical antiques. There’s always something in this shop to bring home.

Mallove’s of Mystic has been my favorite jewelry shop since I moved here. There’s always a beautiful selection of jewelry. The staff at this shop are also so friendly! Always welcoming you in like you’re an old friend.

Spice & Tea Exchange has an assortment of spices and teas. There’s so many unique blends, it’s fun to try new once out while cooking at home. Most often when you visit this shop, they have samples of teas and dips. If you have a foodie lover to shop for, there are many gift sets already made up of their products for you to buy!

Burgee Mystic is a classic New England coastal shop with men & women’s clothing, house decor items and many more. I love the nautical set up of the shop! I’ve picked up some home decor items from here. I also always eye their cute apparel sporting their shop logo (the burgee)!

Trade Winds Gallery is a fine art gallery carrying a collection of artworks from New England artists. If you’re looking for original antique nautical maps, this shop is the place that has it all! Most of the maps are local but if there’s a specific one you’re looking for, you can shoot them a message. The owner is willing to work with you to find what you’re looking for. One of my favorite nautical photographs, that is hanging in my home, came from here. They also do framing if you’re in need.

Company of Craftsmen carries a collection of handmade goods from mostly New England artists. There’s a small selection from artists who are from beyond New England. I once purchased a cleat necklace that was created by someone in Upstate NY (not far from where I grew up!). The goods includes pottery, wood, jewelry, glass and many more. This shop is my favorite for handmade goods. They have a lot of Mystic related items which is perfect to add to your home or give to someone who loves Mystic as much as I do! I’ve even got my eyes on this nautical ship made out of glass sitting in the front window!

Pennywise is my favorite women’s clothing shop in SECT. It is a consignment store, I sell my clothes there too. I opened an account and brought in some clothes. The staff sort through the clothes and pick the ones that will likely be sold in their store. I love shopping there, as most of the clothes are in great condition! They carry a few of my favorite brands too. This shop is dog-friendly! *Located near Mystic Seaport Museum (tugboat entrance).

Just Mystic is the spot to get your Mystic tee or sweatshirt. All of their apparel are simple and classic sporting the names of local towns around here (Mystic, Noank, Stonington, GLP). I love my Mystic long sleeve tee and find myself wearing it often! The shop is owned by siblings - a sister and a brother. Every time I’ve popped in the store, they’re always so friendly! Be sure to follow them on Instagram.

No Other Books Like This is located across the street from the train station. I love popping in this used-books shop! The owner is always friendly, sometimes you will get a visit from the shop dog, Benny. I love when he follows me around while I’m browsing! The bookstore is very cozy and has an impressive collection of rare/antique books!

Olde Mistick Village

Irish Eyes has been my most favorite shop in Mystic since the day one! Carrying all Irish merchandise from clothing, home decor items, jewelry, to gifts. So many items have been purchased from this shop over the years. I love that they even carry some food products from Ireland that you can’t find elsewhere in the United States. They have BELLEEK collection there too. The jewelry they have is always beautiful.

Becca Rose always smells so good when you walk in there! There’s so many goat milk soaps to pick from, they have signs that describe what the soaps help with, things like stress relief, anxiety, headaches, etc. It’s so helpful in picking the right ones! The staff also can help you if you ask them too - they are VERY knowledgeable about the products they sell in the shop.

Franklin’s General Store has been a long time favorite shop in Mystic. Its the typical general store carrying clothing, books, gifts, food, home decor items, and best of all… FUDGE. The fudge is freshly made in their shop daily. There’s seasonal flavors too which are listed on their website. I look forward to February every year for the cherry fudge. My mouth is watery thinking about it! You can sample the fudge too, which will help you to pick the one (or a few) to bring home or to buy for someone!

Sofia’s Mystical Christmas is full with ornaments of all kinds. If you’re looking for a firefighter themed ornament, they got it. If you’re looking for a teacher ornament, they got it. If you’re looking for Irish ornaments, they got it. Literally, any kind ornaments… they are mostly likely to have it! It’s organized by category so it is easy to navigate through the store to find your perfect ornament.

Sticky Situations is where you get the honey! There’s a variety of honey. A few of my favorites include cinnamon honey, dark chocolate honey, peppermint honey and blackberry honey. You’re probably thinking, what would I put that on? Right? No fears, there are helpful staff in the shop to recommend what to put it on or what to eat with it. There are usually signs by the products with recommendations too. You can sample the honey! They sell other items such as olive oil, vinegar and syrup.

Alice’s Haunted Little Bookshop is a fun shop to visit! I’m amazed by the decor - very Victorian style. There is a curated collection of unique books, especially those that were forgotten or weren’t on any bestseller lists. It’s not just books, but gifts, accessories and more are sold in the shop!

Cloak and Wand is very Harry Potter like! It is a shop with a strong wizards and witches theme, completed with a potion bar. The potion bar is a custom soda/hot chocolate bar where you can customize your ‘magic drink’. This is definitely a must to visit!

There are PLENTY of shops in Mystic to shop for Small Business Saturday! I couldn’t even list them all, but there’s always something for everyone. I love the variety that Mystic offers. It’s always so much fun to shop with amazing customer service there. It definitely motivates me to keep buying from the mom-and-pop shops whenever I can. Don’t forget to visit these shops during the holidays too! Downtown Mystic hosts the holiday stroll in early December when shops stays open later for last minute shopping with refreshments. Olde Mistick Village hosts their Festival of Lights event. The whole village is lighted up with luminaries, it’s so beautiful to see. I love the holidays time in Mystic, CT!

What to do in Mystic, Connecticut during September

September usually signals the beginning of locals summer in Mystic, Connecticut. Let me tell you something, it never slows down in Mystic! There are plenty to do even during September. The weather is still bringing us nice temperatures during the day (but it may be crisp in the mornings/evenings so be sure to dress for it!).

Enjoy apple cider donuts at B.F. Clyde’s Cider Mill

It’s a September tradition when the last surviving steam powered cider mill opens for the season on September 1st (and usually runs until late Nov/early Dec). You can’t get more into the fall festive with some apple cider or donuts! The cider mill is also very Instagrammable spot - a lot opportunities for photos! Do keep in mind, it gets busy on the weekends and may be crowded. Read more about Clyde’s Cider Mill here.

Sail with Argia Mystic Cruises

Don’t pass up on this opportunity to get out on the water! It may be chilly compared to summer but the views are still beautiful. People always rave about the sunset sails and the amazing staff. I have personally cruised on Argia before and would highly recommend it too! They are doing sails until October.

Paddle with Adventure Mystic on Mystic River

Another way to be on the water can be by kayaking or stand-up paddling. You can rent them at Adventure Mystic located in the Schooner Wharf. This can’t be better location to explore the Mystic River, it takes you right to Downtown area or you can explore Mystic Seaport from the water.

Apple picking at Whittle’s Willow Spring Farm

Whittle’s Farm is the place to be for apple picking! They have several apple trees on the property to pick from. The best part? It’s dog friendly! I never could find apple orchards that allowed me to bring my pup. Another reason why you should go to Whittle’s, they have the best veggies and fruits in their farm market. Gourds/pumpkins also may make an appearance closer to October!

No vampires at the Garlic festival at Olde Mistick Village

A popular festival during September, where there are 50+ vendors and 16 local musicians. It’s fun to see all the creativity of using garlic in food so if you love garlic, this festival is for you! Even if you don’t enjoy garlic, you can shop in all the local businesses which there’s something for everyone!

Mum’s the word at Stonington Gardens

I swear that Stonington Gardens is the best garden center for the mums! I have annual tradition to go there in September to get the mums for the front porch. A beautiful center that is also very photogenic and they do events on the weekends such as building your own scarecrow. It’s worth a look in! This also isn’t too far from B.F. Clyde’s Cider Mill.

Never a bad time to visit Mystic Seaport

I love Mystic Seaport so of course, I’ll always recommend to visit the largest Maritime museum. There’s so much to do and see at the Seaport. If you’re interested in attending an event, make sure you check their calendar on their website. Many of their boat vessels are also available for tours in September — private charters, Sabino, Mystic Water Taxi. Fingers crossed that foliage will start to show by end of September!

Mystic has the luxury of being a small town with a charm that is opened year-round. It never slows down here! Don’t hesitant to reach out to me if you wanted more tailored recommendations for your visit to Mystic!

A Taste of Fall at B.F. Clyde’s Cider Mill in Mystic

Fall is my favorite season! It’s the time of pumpkins and apples (I’m team apples all the way!). I love that the New England region offers so MANY gorgeous places to visit the during fall season. One of my favorites is the apple cider mill in Old Mystic, CT - B.F. Clyde’s Cider Mill.

B.F. Clyde’s is a national historic mechanical engineering landmark because they are the last surviving steam powered cider mill. They still have the machinery that makes the cider in a building that people are welcome to tour. There is a plaque on the building explaining the history of B.F. Clyde’s. I learned that the machinery manufacturer was located in Syracuse, NY (2 hours from my hometown!). There is cider making demonstrations on the weekends in October and November. Check out their websites for specific times of the demonstrations.

They open for the season in September. It’s ALWAYS my first fall tradition to start the season by going there! I’ve tried so many apple ciders but this one is just my absolute favorite.

The smell of the cider donuts hits you once you get out of your car. The vibe of B.F. Clyde’s just screams everything fall. You will see a few buildings on the property - the cider mill machinery building, general store, wine tasting and the gift shop. The general store is where you purchase the sweet cider, treats, and jar goods. They offer wine tastings on the weekends as well. The gift shop has the souvenirs to remind you of your visit to B.F. Clyde’s. They have cool t-shirts and mugs that I have purchased! On the weekends, there are a few vendors selling syrup and popcorn.

I recommend the cider donuts, apple turnovers and apple pie but you can’t go wrong with any of their baked treats! I love to bring a gallon of sweet cider home - sometime I enjoy it cold or heated up. B.F. Clyde’s also offers apple cider slushies.

The cider mill is so popular that there can be long lines on the weekends but it’s definitely worth the wait! If you’re lucky to live close by, it’s less crowded during the week. B.F. Clyde’s only operates until December, so make sure you get there before the season ends! It’s a fun place to visit for everyone of all ages. Nothing feels more fall than B.F. Clyde’s cider mill!

Visit B.F. Clyde’s Cider Mill at 129 N. Stonington Road in Old Mystic, CT.

Mystic Outdoor Art Festival

One of the biggest events in Downtown Mystic is the Mystic Outdoor Art Festival (MOAF). The annual event isn’t the one to miss! Greater Mystic Chamber of Commerce hosts this long running festival for two days, Saturday and Sunday. It is free to enjoy the art festival!

The festival always brings thousands of visitors to Mystic to enjoy this event. There are many, many artists of all kinds. According to the website, 200+ artists - with a variety of paintings, photography, oil & watercolors, sculptures and many, many more!

The ~2 miles long route runs from Cottrell St —> Holmes St —> Bay St —> Mystic Seaport Museum. The art show is in the shipyard section of Mystic Seaport Museum. There is no museum admission fee for this portion of the grounds.

I’ve attended this festival for over a decade now. It’s always something I look forward to because there’s always something new every year! Around my house, there are many art pieces from over the years that I’ve purchased at the MOAF. There’s always something for everyone!

Also a tip: This is a rain or shine event. If it happens that the day of festival is very sunny, there isn’t a lot of shade along the route so wear some sunscreen and stay hydrated!

Don’t miss this fun event in Downtown Mystic!

Things to do in Mystic, CT on a Rainy Day

Bummer! You’ve arrived to Mystic, Connecticut and you are stuck with a rainy day! What to do now? As a local of Mystic, I can share the best activities for rainy days! You still can have a fun time with the bad weather.

Brave souls on the water!

TOUR THE MYSTIC NOANK LIBRARY

One of the most beautiful library I’ve seen in my life. There is a lot of seafaring history within the building. It is opened to the public to tour during library hours. Don’t miss going upstairs to the second floor where the ceiling resemble the hull of a ship. The library also has two lived in cats — Matilda and Violet! Take your time, sit in a chair and relax with a magazine or book. There are also puzzles you can use.

VISIT MUSEUMS/AQUARIUM

Mystic has a few museums and an aquarium worthy enough to visit!

  • Mystic Museum of Art - a small museum with beautiful curated art works. Opened year around with free admission (unless there is a special exhibition) but donations are appreciated. Don’t miss out on the waterfront views from the back of the museum.

  • Mystic Aquarium - the aquarium is one of the largest in the United States. It’s easy enough to spend an entire day there. I always look so forward to the sea lions show as well visit the penguins and the whales. Note: half of the aquarium is outdoors (whales, penguins and sea lions) but there are some indoor exhibits where you can see fishes, jellyfishes, reptiles, stingrays, etc. The interactive Dino Seas exhibit is also indoors.

  • Mystic Seaport Museum - this 19th century seafaring village is one of my favorite spots in Mystic. There are many buildings through out the Seaport — you do have to be in and out of the rain a bit to get from a building to another.

SHOP AT OLDE MISTICK VILLAGE

Opened year-round, this colonial 18th century village has over 50+ unique shops! The village consists of a luxury movie theater, restaurants, unique shops and more. There is something for absolutely everyone. Watch a movie at the Mystic Luxury Cinema — the comfy chairs are worth it! There will be times when you have to walk outside in the rain to get to another store (not all of them have roof where you can stand underneath).

TAKE THE MYSTIC PIZZA TOUR

You know that movie with Julia Roberts? It really was inspired by Mystic Pizza right here in Mystic, CT! The pizza restaurant may not be the actual filming location but there are many nearby in Mystic, Stonington, Pawcatuck, Noank and Westerly, RI. Take a ride in your car and drive by the locations! The addresses of the locations can be found on this blog: Mystic Pizza Tour.

ENJOY A HOT CLAM CHOWDER

You can’t go wrong with a clam chowder on a rainy day. Mystic has A LOT of seafood restaurants to pick from. My personal favorite clam chowder is at S&P Oyster in Downtown Mystic, which you also get a waterfront view (a bonus!).

GO ANTIQUING / THRIFTING

There are a few antique and thrift shops in Mystic and even more in neighboring towns. My personal favorites are Pennywise (clothing) and Marine Consignment (nautical goods/DIY projects) in Mystic. I also recommend the COMO thrift store in Stonington.

Mystic holds a lot of charm and I love how it is an ideal spot to visit year-round. I hope you find this guide helpful and enjoy your visit. Pop over to my Instagram @knotsoloud and see more of Mystic on my feed. I would love to hear about your visit to Mystic!

Mystic Seaport: Where History Meets the Sea

If I had to name my most favorite spot in Mystic… it’d be the Mystic Seaport Museum. That won’t come as a surprise if you’re following me on Instagram (@knotsoloud) as I’ve posted many, many photographs from there! I have been visiting them for years, so often that my parents gifted me a membership one Christmas. I’ve been a proud member since 2013!

Mystic Seaport is DOG FRIENDLY! I bring my Dalmatian and we’d walk around the grounds, enjoy the beautiful scenery of Mystic River. The drawbridge downtown can be seen from many points at Seaport. I was particularly excited when ‘Bring Fido’, a traveling app for people with pets used my photo of my dog and I at the Seaport!

It’s one place that is gorgeous during all seasons. I really can’t pick a favorite. The Mystic River is gorgeous in the autumn with the trees changing colors. The reflection of its colors on the river’s water just enhances the beauty of Mystic. The snowy covered grounds is also a sight! I was lucky to be granted access (member privilege!) right after a snow storm, one of my favorite photographing memory! Summer is colorful, with those sailboats in the river.

Mystic Seaport Museum is known for their 19th century seafaring village, the shipyard, and sailing ships. Each of the building in the village is set up as an exhibit. The exhibits portrays all the craftsmen and trades that contributes to ship building. It is very interesting to learn about what goes into building a ship.

The shipyard is where it all happens, the constructing of a boat. There is always a boat there that is being restored. There is an observe deck near the boat that is being restored so you can watch the volunteers at work. It amazes me to watch them work!

There are a few ships at Mystic Seaport to tour. The Charles W. Morgan ship is a favorite. It is the oldest surviving wooden whaling ship from the 19th century.  I watched it go under a multi million dollar restoration project in 2010, it was very fascinating to follow the progress. I followed it closely up to the day it was re-launched into the Mystic River. That day was a very memorable event. Thousands of people came out on their boats on the river or stood along the Mystic River to see the ship sail. I stood near the drawbridge when I saw it sail down the Mystic River to embark on the voyage around New England for the summer. It is currently docked and an active exhibit at Mystic Seaport so I highly recommend you to check it out.

The Mystic Seaport hosts many events throughout the year. A favorite of mine is the Wooden Boat Show at end of June. I attend the event annually! It shows a collection of beautiful traditional and classic wooden boats. The festival is usually all weekend long, so there is plenty to do. There are demonstrations and performances to see, special tours of wooden boats, and vendors/exhibitors.

Another worthy mention about the Seaport, is that they offer sailing programs. This is where I learned how to sail the year I purchased our sailboat. The instructors were very informative and helpful.

Don’t forget to stop in the Museum bookstore on your way out. A collection of nautical related books, apparel, souvenirs, nautical home decor products and many more!

Hours and pricing information are available here on their website here.

All photos are my own. Prints are available for purchase.

A guide to summer in Mystic, CT

Summer has begun in Mystic, Connecticut! There are plenty to do for everyone. As a local, I thought I’d share my top recommendations of what to do in Mystic during this summer. Some tips for summer visitors — if you can, visit during the weekdays when it’s less crowded. The drawbridge goes up every hour on the 40 mark from 7:40am to 6:40pm (and on demand). This can cause a traffic jam around the time and could have up to 20 minutes wait (depends on how many boats are passing by). Plan to drive around the bridge times to avoid being caught in the traffic! On the weekends, I would recommend you to arrive to Downtown area around 9-10am when finding parking won’t be as difficult. Hope you find plenty of fun things to do in Mystic!

GET ON THE WATER

There’s many ways to be on the water whether it’s sailing on a ship, a private boat charter, or kayaking. I’ve experienced a sunset cruise with Sail Argia and highly recommend it. The staff are also excellent in sharing their knowledge of the area. If you like kayaking or stand up paddle, look no further than Adventure Mystic. I’ve kayaked with them several times over the last 10 years and always had an amazing time. Other businesses to consider: Mystic River Cruises, Mystic Boat Adventures, Mystic Seaport Museum.

ENJOY THE RIVER VIEW FROM COASTAL ACCESSES

I frequent those coastal accesses for photographing the shoreline landscapes or just to appreciate the views. It’s all opened to the public but please remember to respect the coastal accesses area, as some are near private residences. The locals appreciate it greatly if you pick up after yourselves too! I complied a list of the Mystic Coastal Accesses here.

Take a day road trip to check out the locations! Things to do during Spring in Mystic, CT

Happy Spring! I’m thrilled that the warmer weather will be here (we already had some ‘teaser’ days!) and we can enjoy the outdoors more. I’m also excited for all of the flowers to bloom across Mystic. I love that Mystic is an ideal town to visit year-round. Here are some suggestions for things to do this spring:

DAFFODILS @ DENISON HOMESTEAD MUSEUM

The unofficial kick-off to spring in Mystic starts with 10,000 beautiful daffodils blooming at Denison Homestead Museum! It usually starts in late March/early April. The field is directly in front of the house, which is visible from the road. It is open to the public from dawn-dusk. Stop by, enjoy them and take photos! Also a head’s up - the field can be muddy so be sure to wear rain boots! Don’t miss the Daffodil Festival usually held in the first week of April where you can tour the historical house, there are craft activities for kids and enjoy food/drinks. Extend your visit to the daffodil field with a hike on 10+ miles of trails at Denison Nature Center located across the street. Read more about it here.

LENTEN FISH FRY

Every Friday during Lent, there are several locations that fry up delicious fish and chips! Open to anyone of any faith to enjoy. Stop by:

  • Portuguese Holy Ghost Society in Stonington Borough from 11am-7:30pm

  • Mystic Fire Department at Hoxie House from 5-8pm

  • J&R Seafood Market from 11am-7pm

  • St. Edmund’s Retreat at Enders Island starts at 6pm

ST. PATRICK’S DAY PARADE

One of the best days in Mystic! The parade is one of the region’s largest held on the Sunday after St. Patrick’s Day. The parade route starts at the south parking lot of Mystic Seaport, goes to Broadway, Main Street (Downtown Mystic) and ending at Mystic Art Museum. It usually draws 30K visitors to enjoy the festive event so be sure to arrive early to find a parking spot! Read more about St. Patrick’s Day in Mystic on a previous blog here.

shoreline photography: mystic’s best views

Living in Mystic, CT has inspired my passion for photography to make a comeback. I got into photography when I was a teen. I majored it in high school then first year of college before I decided I wanted to keep it as a hobby. I feared that doing it as a job would make me lose the fun I have while photographing.

During the pandemic, I was talking a lot more of walks around different neighborhoods in Mystic that I normally don’t walk through. I wanted to see more of the town and I had that extra time! As Mystic draws many visitors to the town, I thought I’d share my recommendations with photographers who desire to find the best photogenic spots in Mystic.

Mystic is blessed with it all — shoreline views, beautiful historical homes, wildlife, sunsets and more! My recommendations for the best photography spots are:

  • Downtown Mystic — you can’t go wrong with the historic drawbridge. If you’re visiting between spring-fall, you will be able to capture it in motion. The best views of the bridge would be on the Stonington side (Whaler’s Inn) from Mystic River Park. You also can walk around Downtown, I highly suggest getting up early in the morning (7-9am) before downtown gets busy.

  • River Road — this is the ideal spot for wildlife photographing. If you drive down near Peace Sanctuary, there will be some parking area off the side of the road. If you walk towards the overpass bridge, you’ll see several nests.

  • Pearl St x Starr St — the best view of Mystic Seaport lighthouse. I suggest going there for either sunrise or sunset, I always get amazing colors with the lighthouse!

  • Gravel St — a scenic route right by Mystic River. You can capture a lot from there from boats, birds, water activities and more. If you happen to be in town during full moon, I've captured my best photos of it from this location.

  • Mystic Seaport Museum — you’ll need an admission fee to get inside but I always get countless photos from there. I’ve photographed the visiting boats (Wooden Boat Show in June!), many close ups of nautical items, the water activity on Mystic River, the sailing classes with the bright colorful sails, the landscape of the historical village, it goes on and on!

  • Coastal accesses — there are so many of them along Mystic River with beautiful views. I’ve complied a list of them on a separate blog here. I’ve captured photos from all of them.

  • Holmes St to Bay St — another scenic route by the Mystic River. This is a favorite spot during fall for foliage photographing.

  • Historical homes — there are many of them around Mystic. I would suggest these following streets because they are very walkable: Willow Street, Gravel Street, Elm Street, Pearl Street, West Mystic Ave.

Hope you enjoy photographing the beautiful coastal town of Mystic! I always love seeing different perspectives from other photographers. It’s amazing how many different ways we all see Mystic!

celebrate St. Patrick's Day in Mystic

"St. Patrick's Day is a day to celebrate our green heritage. The ancestry of Ireland. It is a day to celebrate what it means to be Irish and of Irish descent." -Anthony T. Hicks

The knotty shamrock made by Mystic Knotwork.

Mystic, Connecticut has the region’s largest St. Patrick’s Day parade every year on the Sunday after St. Patrick’s Day. The parade route starts at the south parking lot of the Mystic Seaport and running through Broadway to Main St (Downtown Mystic). The end of the parade is at Mystic Art Museum, which is close to Sift Bake Shop. The Mystic Irish Parade Foundation (MIPF) always does an EXCELLENT job of organizing the parade every year to celebrate the Irish heritage for everyone! Can you believe that MIPF is completely volunteer driven and a nonprofit organization?!

Westerly Fire Department in St. Patrick’s Day parade 2023.

The parade itself is very impressive with over 2,000 participants and drawing 30,000 speculators every year. The usual participants are the fire departments (love how Mystic firefighters always sports the green gloves!), local organizations, antique cars, Mystic Aquarium, St. Patrick’s Church, the bagpipes bands, marching bands and the Guinness truck. It was a memorable year in 2018 when the Budweiser Clydesdales marched in the parade. I was especially excited as a (crazy) Dalmatian mom to see Barley the Budweiser Dalmatian!

Budweiser Clydesdales marched in the parade in 2018.

Budweiser Clydesdales marched in the parade in 2018.

It can get crazy packed in the downtown area. I suggest you to get parking at least couple hours before the parade starts. The town police will close off routes across the town. If you want to be in downtown, there is parking at the Mystic Art Museum. If you want to be on the other side near Mystic Seaport Museum, there will be parking at Olde Mistick Village but it’s a trek! Most probably you will have to hunt for a spot on one of the many side streets along the parade route.

Mystic Highland Pipe Band in the parade.

Downtown Mystic gets VERY festive for St. Patrick’s Day with storefront decorations, Irish themed food/drinks, shamrocks everywhere and the tricolor Ireland flags waving throughout the town. I may live in the area, but I definitely think it is worth the drive to come here for the Irish weekend! The best part is there’s plenty to make a weekend out of it. If you are in town on Friday night, the B.F. Hoxie Engine Co. (near the Mystic train station) hosts their annual fish ‘n’ chips dinner from 5-8 PM. They have one of the most delicious fish fry in the region! Mystic Irish 5K will be happening on the Saturday before parade day. On parade day, the Mystic Hook and Ladder Fire Company hosts their annual breakfast. They will be serving an all you can eat with eggs, home fries, corned beef hash, sausage, bacon, pancakes, and toast. Coffee and orange juice will be available.

The local businesses in downtown Mystic also get into the celebrations! The Black Dog always have St. Patrick’s Day themed clothing and hats. Sift Bake Shop rolls out their green croissants filled with Bailey Irish Cream! Mystic Knotwork made a green shamrock out of rope which is visible on the Mystic Drawbridge as well as their retail shops. Known for their handcrafted recycled sails tote bags, Sea Bags has shamrock themed bags! Looking for some Irish whiskey or Irish cream? Spencer & Lynn has all of the necessaries!

Young buns doughnuts [no longer in business] used to roll out fun St. Patrick’s Day themed donuts!

I can’t write this post without mentioning Harp & Hound Pub. It’s a necessity to stop in for a pint when you’re in Mystic. It is one of the most authentic Irish pubs I’ve been in. The owner is from Limerick, Ireland. The pub is filled with dark wood decor and roadway signs from Ireland as well patches from first responders. They also serve sandwiches and traditional Irish entrees for lunch and dinner. Every time I’m missing Ireland, I just go to the pub and reminiscence the memories!

Westerly FD in the parade.

Mystic Irish Parade Foundation does a raffle drawing every year with 3 prizes. The 3rd prize is a $200 gift card to Taber Inn in Mystic. The 2nd prize is an iPad Air. The grand prize is a trip for two to IRELAND! It includes 7 days/6 nights accommodations, round trip airfare, and car rental. You can purchase the raffle tickets which are $5 at Harp & Hound Pub. You do not need to be present to win. It’s an annual tradition to enter myself in the raffle drawing hoping for the grand prize! Who wouldn’t want a free trip to the beautiful Emerald Isle?!

The Ireland flag in the parade.

Lastly, don’t forget to visit Irish Eyes at Olde Mistick Village. They have everything you would need - a shirt? They got it! A hat? They got it! Irish sweaters? They got it! I love the Irish jewelry selection - make it a memorable trip and get yourself a claddagh ring to remember the fun Irish weekend in Mystic!

explore the wonders of mystic aquarium

Mystic Aquarium is home to thousands of marine life from penguins, beluga whales, seas lions to fishes. It’s so easy to spend the entire day there. It’s no surprise that Mystic Aquarium was named one of the best aquariums in the United States.

The aquarium is opened year round as it has both indoor and outdoor exhibits. The indoor exhibits include fishes, octopus, jellyfishes, sharks and many more! Another indoor exhibit is Dino Seas which is an interactive exhibit on the history of dinosaurs. The outdoor exhibits include beluga whales, seals, sea lions and penguins. There is also a marsh area where you can find turtles.

To make your visit more fun, look into the encounters with animals where you can interact with penguins, sea lions and seals. These experiences have an additional cost on top of admission cost. It will be worth it to have a memorable experience! I enjoyed my experience of feeding the stingrays — I was scared at first but then had fun!

What I love about the aquarium is the easy flow of the layout, I always start the visit at the beluga whales exhibit. Look for my friend, Juno. They are so fun and I love it when they are playful with the visitors. I head over to the penguins and watch them waddle and paddle! If I’m lucky, I enjoy watching them during feeding time. The sea lion show (indoors) is a must, it never gets old. The aquarium does a good job of switching up themes of the shows yearly. I tend to spend most of my time there at the outdoor exhibits. At the end of the visit, I always do a walkthrough of the indoor exhibits. It’s fascinating to watch the jellyfishes!

How I found out about the aquarium was through their Animal Rescue/Rehab Center. I attended a seal release in Charlestown, Rhode Island back in 2012/2013. I was very intrigued to learn about all they do for injured animals and how they get rehabbed for releases. They do several seal releases which I try to attend — it’s heartwarming to watch them go back in the ocean! To follow when seal releases happens, Mystic Aquarium Animal Rescue Program post updates on their Facebook page here. I do have to warn, these events do get very packed! I suggest getting to the beach early.

If you get hungry during your visit at the aquarium, there is a cafe where you can order food. There are several tables inside and outside where you can dine. Don’t forget to stop in the aquarium shop located next door. Pick up a souvenir to remember your fun memorable day there!

You can purchase tickets online at their website. There are ways you can save on your tickets, through a membership, special discounts for Military, First Responders, UConn, Foxwoods, etc. If you’re a resident in Connecticut, many libraries provide a day pass for discounted tickets. All information about hours, pricing, discounts are available here on their website. Parking is free on site.

5 Free Things to do this Fall in Mystic, CT

Looking for something to do in Mystic, Connecticut but you’re on a low budget? No fear, I’ve got the scoop for you! As a local, I know all the best recommendations of what to do and see in the area!

Mystic Museum of Art

The museum is located in downtown Mystic. It is right on Mystic River so it has a great water view from the back patio/walking path! The museum itself is on the smaller side with usually 1-2 exhibitions, it is worth a look around! I’ve enjoyed several exhibitions that came in town. Do keep in mind that sometimes a special exhibition may require a fee so keep updated with their website here. While it is free admission, donations are greatly appreciated.

Ender’s Island

A remote compound located on Mason’s Island opened to the public from dawn-dusk. It is a Catholic retreat with a church, several residential buildings, offices, dining hall and more. There are beautiful gardens by the sea that you can enjoy. I’ve seen people picnic on the lawn, sit in the gazebo enjoying the waterfront views, artists painting the scenery, etc. This goes without saying, but please respect the property - keep it beautiful!

Esker Point Beach

It may not be warm enough for a swim but enjoy the locals summer at the beach! Go for a walk by the water, enjoy a cookout at the picnic area, read a good book on a blanket in the sand, or take photos of Morgan Point Lighthouse. Esker Point Beach is free to the public year-round.

Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center

There are several hiking trails at the Nature Center. You can find the map on their website here and at the center. Over 10+ miles of trails will take you through the beautiful wetlands! If you enjoy bird-watching, this would be a great spot for you to visit. Opened dawn to dusk.

Explore the Coastal Accesses

I love the coastal accesses on the shoreline. There are so many of them! I’ve included them in several guides by towns: Mystic, Groton/Noank, and Stonington. The best part? It’s free to appreciate the beauty of the shoreline!

Sift Bake Shop Mystic

Happy National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day!

Without a question, my favorite gluten free/dairy free (vegan) chocolate chip cookie is from Sift Bake Shop in Mystic, CT! It is the most delicious cookie and it’s so worth it.

I thought I’d take this opportunity to share more about Sift Bake Shop. If you visit Mystic, CT - you can’t leave without a visit there. Located on Water Street, this French focused bakery is known for their savory treats. Croissants, macarons, cookies, bread, and many more!

The owner, Pastry Chef Adam Young, competed on the Food Network’s “Best Baker in America” TV show in 2018. He ended up winning! It was quite exciting for Mystic and all Sift fans to have our local chef win! This definitely brought more visitors to Mystic to visit Sift and to see Chef Adam.

It’s been amazing to watch the progress of Sift Bake Shop, I remember when they first opened. The shop was a lot smaller and just had one location! Today, they have more locations in Watch Hill, RI; Niantic, CT; and now Mohegan Sun Casino. They also own Mix Rooftop & Bar, Adam T. Young Bar & Bonbons (cocktail & chocolate bar) and formerly owned Young Buns Doughnuts. I’ve enjoyed watching this business grow (and their delicious products!).

Entering Sift is just a magical experience, to walk among the glass and check out the bakery goods such as macarons, cakes, sandwiches, bread, cookies, croissants, and many more! It’s so hard to pick when you want to try everything. They aren’t known for 1-2 items… EVERYTHING is that good. They also have a drink menu offering coffee and tea. They do all of their baking in-house, you can have a sneak peek of their kitchen in the back through a glass window. Most of time, you’ll get to see Chef Adam!

You will be able to place your order with a staff. The staff will instruct you to wait by the cash registers while they get your order together. Credit cards/Apple Pay is accepted. There are several seating options inside and outside on the patio.

My favorites have changed over the years, not by choice. I had to be on a gluten free diet in 2019. I enjoy the GF/dairy free chocolate chip cookie and the delicious macarons. Please note, it is not a dedicated gluten free bakery so there’s always the risk of cross contamination. The staff do their best, very willing to switch their gloves when handling GF products. Before going gluten free, my favorite treats were the chocolate croissant (it is to die for!), pecan scottie cookie and ebbieoche (cinnamon sugar croissant).

Sift Bake Shop also has fun seasonal offerings. Some of the best are: the green croissants with Irish cream filling for St. Patrick’s Day (and parade day!), breakable chocolate Easter egg with treats inside, seasonal flavored macarons (I LOVE the pumpkin during fall and peppermint during winter).

Be sure to sign up for the email list where you’ll get the updates, special menu for holidays, news, etc. You also can follow them on their social media too. It’s definitely worthwhile to stop by Sift Bake Shop, it won’t be your last time there after you have a bite of their deliciousness!

explore mystic by water by kayaking with Adventure Mystic

Last week I had an unforgettable kayaking experience on the Mystic River with Adventure Mystic. They reached out and told me that one of their paddle instructors had the ability to use American Sign Language (ASL). I agreed to book a paddle with them.

Usually in the past, when I’m told that someone knows sign language… it’s very BASIC. Maybe a few signs and fingerspelling. Not enough to hold a conversation. I went into this with low expectations. When I met Vega, the paddle instructor… I quickly realized she knew a good amount of ASL! I was thrilled. She was very accommodating.

She took my family and I out on Mystic River for a personalized experience. I ended up chatting with her a lot. It was so nice to have someone other than my family member to sign with. Vega was very attentive, asked questions, made sure that I knew what was going on and she was very easy to talk with. Very friendly. The ability to have a conversation with her made this whole experience a lot more  fun and meaningful.

I’ve used Adventure Mystic in the past and it’s always been a fun time. You can’t beat the views you get on the scenic Mystic River. You get to see Downtown Mystic and Mystic Seaport Museum from a different perspective. We got to watch the drawbridge go up from the water. It’s fun to paddle under the drawbridge, but watch out for the pigeons!

The evening we went was the perfect temperature and a beautiful day. It was relaxing and we enjoyed the views. Every time I’ve gone to Adventure Mystic, the staff has always been helpful and friendly. Now I can add that they have a paddle instructor who is deaf friendly this summer!

Adventure Mystic is located in downtown Mystic at 15 Holmes Street. You can rent kayaks or SUP paddle board for 1 hour, 2 hour, half day or full day. Very affordable prices. Opened daily from 10am-6pm.

Mystic Coastal Accesses

On the Connecticut shoreline, there are many coastal accesses where you can enjoy the beautiful waterfront views. I love this for those times that I want to be near the water or photograph the shoreline.

Here are some coastal accesses opened to the public to enjoy in Mystic, CT:

  • Central Hall (the building next to Mystic Drawbridge Ice Cream) - The entrance/exit to the coastal access is located between FatFace and The Spice & Tea Exchange stores. You can see Mystic Seaport and S&P Oyster from here.

  • Fort Rachel Marine / Water Street Public Dock / Condos Waterfront Walkway - There are multiple coastal accesses within each other. This is in the area of Daniel Packer Inne. Fort Rachel is an active marine, this path will allow you see a typical boatyard. The Water Street Dock is across from Daniel Packer Inne. You can see the drawbridge from here. There are two more coastal accesses in active marines where there are picnic tables for anyone to enjoy. The brick building (condos) also have a short walkway by the water.

  • Steamboat Inn - there is a boardwalk in front of Steamboat Inn that is accessible from the drawbridge, taking you along the water towards the parking lot behind Sift Bake Shop. You can continue on the Mystic Art Museum coastal access path from the parking lot.

  • Mystic Art Museum - there is a path overlooking the water. There are several benches where people can sit and relax to take in the views. I’ve seen some people picnic there.

  • S&P Oyster - the boardwalk next to the restaurant is another option to watch the drawbridge action!

  • Mystic River Park - probably the most well known coastal access spot! The park is ideal for dogs to play in the grass, MANY benches for people to sit, a lot activity happens in this park especially during summers. Public restrooms are located here as well.

  • Red 36 - There is a path by the restaurant that overlooks Mystic River. Parking is available in the restaurant’s lot.

  • Holmes St Dock - There is a dingy dock off Holmes Street that is opened to the public. From here you can see the Mystic Seaport. Parking would be best in the Schooner Wharf lot.

  • Bay Street - One of the best scenic views of Mystic. There is a small boat launch right next to Mystic Seaport on Bay Street, it’s not much to see unless you have kayaks or small boats to launch. Take a stroll on Bay Street, the views here is worth it! There is on-street parking on Bay Street.

  • Park Place - this is a hidden gem. The best view of Mystic Seaport lighthouse! There is a small bench there. Parking would be best on Gravel St and walk to end of Park Place.

If I did not mention parking for specific coastal accesses - it would be same recommendation as if you were going to Downtown Mystic. Mystic Art Museum has a public parking lot for a daily rate fee. Mystic River Park has free 2-hour parking.

I frequent those coastal accesses for photographing the shoreline landscapes or just to appreciate the views. Please remember to respect the coastal accesses area, as some are near private residences. The locals ppreciate it greatly if you pick up after yourselves too!
