Northern Lights Celebration

December is my favorite winter month filled with holidays events to do and to see. Maine, especially, is a favorite! There’s the Christmas Prelude in Kennebunkport and L.L. Bean’s Northern Lights Celebration in Freeport. I went to Northern Lights Celebration for the first time last year. I had to see what it was all about!

It takes place at the L.L. Bean flagship store in Freeport, ME. They have a village green which is where everything is! There is a discovery forest, warming yurt, Santa and his reindeer and photo ops. There’s even a horse drawn carriage rides on the weekends. The warming yurt is a 30 ft cozy space that makes you feel like you’re at a ski lodge resort. I almost forgot the hot cocoa bar! It’s very festive on the village green, as well in the L.L. Bean stores. If you visit the kids department, you will see the train village.

I loved the discovery forest, which is approximately 600 trees that fill the village green. There are trails that lead through the trees. A giant Christmas tree is also set up in the middle of the discovery forest. There are photo ops for people to sit on a sled or a walk-in snow globe (it’s new this year!).

The most popular attraction is obviously is Santa! He come to visits (only Fridays-Sundays) and has the reindeer. The reindeer are amazing to see! They’re in a beautiful barn next to the discovery forest. My dog was very curious when she saw the reindeer last year! Dogs are welcome on the village green but not in the stores due to food policy within their restaurants.

During the week, there are events such as Mondays’ Boat and Tote painting class, Tuesdays’ archery shoot, Wednesdays’ special guests, Thursdays’ pet night, and Fridays’ movie night. Saturdays is the story time event for kids and on Sundays you can get custom laces for your bean boots.

There’s plenty to do at the L.L. Bean flagship store, but there is also a lot to do nearby. Freeport has numerous outlet stores within walking distance. Perfect for your holiday shopping! I recommend dining at Linda Bean’s Perfect Maine across the street from L.L. Bean. I ate lunch there last year outside on their patio. The weather was chilly but every table had a small bonfire in the center. It was enjoyable! Be sure to pick up a jar of the blueberry BBQ sauce… it’s always a must to take home whenever I visit Freeport, ME!

The Northern Lights Celebration at L.L. Bean started on November 22nd, it runs until December 31. The New Year Eve Celebration will be taking place on December 31 with fireworks.

So many photo ops!
