If you visit Mystic, Connecticut, you can’t leave without a stop at Sift Bake Shop. Located on Water Street right around the corner from downtown Mystic, you can’t miss it. The bake shop has a lot of french focused bakery treats as well as cakes and breads.
The owner, Pastry Chef Adam Young, competed on the Food Network’s “Best Baker in America” TV show. He ended up winning! There was a big screening party at the pizza restaurant next door to Sift on the night of the finale. I regretted not attending! It was quite exciting for Mystic and all Sift fans to have our local chef to win! It definitely brought more fans to Mystic to visit Sift and to see Chef Adam. On most of my visits to Sift, I do see Chef Adam there working away!
When you enter Sift you’re guided to walk in front of their long glass case full of bakery goods such as macarons, cakes, sandwiches, bread, cookies, croissants, and many more! They also have a drink menu offering coffee and tea. They do all of their cooking in-house, you can have a sneak peek of their kitchen in the back through a glass window. It’s suggested to go there as early, they make just enough for the day to maintain freshness. According to their website their cooks come at 3 AM to cook! They open daily at 7 AM. You definitely can see the passion in their goods everything is made with love!
They offer both breakfast and lunch items such as croissants, scones, muffins and delicious sandwiches. There is a variety of croissants such as ham & cheese, chocolate, almond, and vegetable. As I mentioned, when you walk in you’re right in front of the cases with the goods, this is when people usually place their orders - walking to the cashier registers at the end of the glass cases. Right now the space only has some counters and seats to sit at as well outdoor seating space. Sift just announced recently that the shop will have an expansion to offer 160 more seats by this upcoming spring! That’s exciting news and I’m looking forward to seeing the expansion once it’s done. See the story here.
I go to Sift often to grab my favorite coffee and pick up some treats. I also have stopped there several times for a quick bite after a stroll around downtown or Mystic Seaport. My favorite coffee is the iced white chocolate caramel coffee which is offered as a seasonal item. My favorite treats includes the chocolate croissant (it is to die for!), pecan scottie cookie, ebbieoche (cinnamon sugar croissant), and macarons. My annual tradition for St. Patrick’s Day includes a stop to Sift Bake Shop when they make green croissants with Irish cream filling! Make sure you come for the Irish Parade in Downtown Mystic on March 24th and stop by Sift for those green croissants!
Sift Bake Shop offers seasonal menus during holidays as well. If you sign up for their e-mail list, you will get the updates. Right now there’s a Valentine’s menu which also can be accessed via their website. You also can put in special orders for cakes for any occasion.
It’s definitely worthwhile to stop by Sift Bake Shop, it won’t be your last time there after you have a bite of their deliciousness!
