July reads

I had quite a few favorites for this month! This month is special for me because there is another Deaf book out this month - adding to the ‘Deafshelf’. Looking forward to what August will bring!

Favorites

  • Give Me A Sign by Anna Sortino

Read the blog here.

  • The First Ladies by Marie Benedict and Victoria Christopher Murray

I loved THE PERSONAL LIBRARIAN written by these authors so I was excited when THE FIRST LADIES came out. A historical fiction focusing on the friendship of First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt and civil rights activist Mary McLeod Bethune. I throughly enjoyed this read. The authors did an excellent job of incorporating real historical figures into the stories - they do explain the fact vs fiction in the in the author’s note. I will always read every book by these two!

  • Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros

I know, I know. You have seen this book all over bookstagram if you’re on there. It was overhyped. I ran to the library for another book and happened to see a copy of FOURTH WING sitting there so I thought why not, it’ll for sure be a DNF.   Curiosity will allow me to read a couple pages to see what the hype was all about. I’m sure you’re seeing where this is going as it is listed a favorite… I was wrong. IT IS AN AMAZING BOOK. Definitely one of the best books of the year! I can’t wait for the next in the series. HURRY UP NOVEMBER.

  • The Spectacular by Fiona Davis

Fiona Davis is my most favorite historical fiction author therefore her books are auto-buy. I loved her previous novels which includes THE MAGNOLIA PALACE, THE LIONS OF FIFTH AVENUE, and more. This book follows Marion thorough dual timelines, one during the 50’s when she became a Rockette and the other during the 90’s when she is an older adult. Fiona Davis always does an amazing job of weaving fiction and fact in her writing.

Highly Recommend

  • A Fever in the Heartland by Timothy Egan

A nonfiction read about Ku Klux Klan and the woman who stopped them. It was a very engaging read and I learned a lot more than I did in school. It does get heavy in some parts, but very intriguing. The book was very eye-opening and should be a must read.

  • All the Beauty in the World: The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Me by Patrick Bringley

A memoir from a former museum guard who worked at the MET for a decade. I’ve never been to the MET, but this book made me want to go soon! The author did an amazing job of immersing us in the art museum, making us feel like we’re standing right there next to him. Additionally, it was interesting to learn about some historical information about the art works.

  • Cleat Cute by Meryl Wilsner *Releasing on September 19, 2023

I loved Meryl Wilsner’s previous novel MISTAKES WERE MADE. I was thrilled to see this upcoming release - CLEAT CUTE. A rom-com for Ted Lasso fans! The book was a fast and easy read. The downfall was all the inner monologues. I felt like that really dominated the entire book. Wilsner does do steamy scenes really well tho!

  • Kilt to Order by Susannah Nix

A rom com with a firefighter and a bookworm in a small town? Sign me up! I enjoyed the build up of their friendship to lovers. The characters were very realistic. I’m excited that this was the first in a new series, I’ll definitely be looking out for the rest of them. A fun and light read!
