April reads

It was a really busy month of creating content for Knot So Loud so I didn’t get a lot time for reading. I also had family in town visiting for a week - always love that time with them! I did; however, have some good reads for this month:

FAVORITE

The Audrey Hepburn Estate by Brenda Janowitz

Loved this read - read the blog here.

The Boyfriend Candidate by Ashley Winstead

The cutest rom-com by one of my most favorite authors! It’s coming out on May 9th so stay tuned for a blog the day before!

HIGHLY RECOMMEND

A Guest at the Feast by Colm Tóibín

The author of ‘Brooklyn’ and one of my favorite Irish authors wrote this memoir. It’s a collection of essays focused on his life experiences including cancer, Catholic upbringing, writing. I found this book to be very interesting and learned a lot more about him. He is such a talented writer, I felt like I could picture what he was describing. A funny, witty, smart author. I enjoyed this read!

Our Best Intentions by Vibhuti Jain

I found this to be a powerful read! Taking place in Westchester county, New York it focuses on several high school students who were involved with a stabbing incident. It was a suspenseful read that I finished in two days. It covers the topics of prejudice, discrimination, racism, immigration and many more. It is a complex and emotional packed story. I especially loved the Indian daughter and her father (the main characters) because they felt very realistic. This is a strong debut that I highly recommend!

LIKED

My Last Innocent Year by Daisy Alpert Florin

This was an okay read. It follows a Jewish girl who is about to complete college in New Hampshire. She had a nonconsensual sexual encounter. Afterwards, she struggled with what had happened. Eventually, she starts an affair with her writing professor. Despite the book not having a clear plot to follow, it was an engrossing read. The author’s writing is beautiful. It just lacked emotions, especially when it covered sensitive topics. It was clear that the theme of this book was consent. The book started out strong then the pacing slowed downward. I enjoyed the late 90s nostalgia.
