I spent a wonderful Sunday in the rolling Dutchess County countryside at Orvis Sandanona Shooting Grounds. Wait, what? That’s right, the shooting grounds. Many of you may be wondering why I was there. It may not be as obvious as my nautical obsession but I have a strong interest in sporting clay shooting. I had my first experience when I went to Ireland and fell in love with it.
Orvis Sandanona is the oldest shotgun shooting grounds for sporting clay shooting in Millbrook, New York. They hosted the Game Fair and Sporting weekend this past weekend. The Game Fair is a fun weekend long festival filled of vendors, demonstrations, activities, and events. There were many activities to participate in! You could try out sporting clay shooting or drive a Land Rover. Many demonstrations including dog training, birds, and fly-fishing.
When I first got there, I enjoyed the dog training demonstration. Naturally my love for dogs attracted me to them. Two guys had their own hunting dogs which were trained to retrieve ducks after shooting them. It was very interesting to see these dogs at work! I was able to watch them retrieve ducks in a pond too. It was funny to watch one of the dogs dive into the water he got a lot of air and made a huge splash!
After the dogs demonstration, I went inside Orvis Sandanona retail store. The store was inside a main lodge that was built during Thomas Jefferson’s presidency. It was very rustic country style with beautiful meeting rooms and lounges to relax in. I was able to relax on a comfy couch while my Dalmatian enjoyed the air conditioning! It had been a very hot day in the sun.
Once we re-energized to explore more of Game Fair, we went to get lunch before doing some shopping. There were over 70 vendors on the grounds that mostly had clothing, shotguns, dogs supplies, artwork, etc. I loved shopping the clothing and dog supplies vendors!
After shopping, I made my way down to the Land Rover Experience. The Range Rover has been my ultimate dream car after I saw it at the New York City auto show in 2011. I was excited to drive one on the off-roading course. The off-roading course was intense! The whole course was very muddy so I found myself spinning a couple times! I was able to drive the Rover up a steep hill, through deep ditches, and over small hills. It was a fun experience that I want to do it again!
Unfortunately, I couldn’t participate in the shooting activity since I had my Dalmatian with me. My Dalmatian has a fear of loud noises especially shotguns. Overall, I enjoyed the day at the Game Fair. It was a wonderful sunny day for a walk on the picturesque shooting grounds enjoying everything it had to offer.
The Game Fair and Sporting weekend will be back next year in September 2019.
